Institute 1: Home Assessment & Home Modification in Traditional and Community Practice
Carol Siebert, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA The Home Remedy
Frank Barthold, MS, OTR/L Durham VA Home Based Primary Care
Occupational therapy has a key role in supporting older or disabled individuals to age in place—staying in their homes and communities. This institute is for practitioners who want to learn the basics of effective assessment and intervention focused on the home environment. Effective practice means moving beyond simple checklists for “home safety” and developing assessment skills that focus on the person-environment interaction and the relevance of place to performance. This institute: 1) reviews the evidence for OT services addressing safety and independence in the home, 2) reviews available assessments, 3) presents basic strategies for modifying the environment to support performance and 4) discusses the role of OT and environmental interventions in post acute settings, home based practice and in a community organization (Rebuilding Together.)
Institute 2: How to Fabricate a Low Profile Radial Nerve Palsy Splint
Wendy Perrini MS, OTR/L, CHT, and Sam Pasour, OTR/L, CHT
This presentation will begin with a brief discussion of the causes, clinical signs/symptoms and treatment of radial nerve injuries. Comparisons will be made to the traditional high profile radial nerve palsy splint and a low profile radial nerve palsy splint. Participants will then get the opportunity to fabricate a custom low profile radial nerve palsy splint.
