NCOTA 2018 AT/AE Design Competition

The AT/AE Design Competition is a new initiative for NCOTA and is geared toward student development and encouraging creative, client-centered assistive technology (AT)/adaptive equipment (AE). This competition grew out of a similar program that was sponsored for 15 years by the SP Ableware Maddak company in conjunction with AOTA at the annual, national conference. Sadly, that competition ended in March of 2017. While students and clinicians were eligible to participate at the national level and win financial awards with their designs, this year NCOTA will concentrate on students only.  The 2018 competition will be sponsored by Pisces Healthcare Solutions with a total of $500 in prize money (1st place: $300, 2nd place: $150, and 3rd place: $50). Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite AT/AE entry and the creating student will receive a prize.

All students currently enrolled in OT and OTA programs in the state of North Carolina are eligible for entry. Students must submit a prototype of their AT/AE product and/or a video if the product is too large or they are unable to make a prototype. Each student will make a flyer to complement the prototype, including a description of their product and all information outlined on the provided entry form.  Each AT/AE entry will be judged at the conference by a team experienced in AT, with winners announced during the conference. Every entry must be accompanied. If a student cannot attend, a representative for that student can present the AT/AE entry on their behalf (student entrant presence is preferred).  The student or designated representative will be required to accompany each entry and answer questions and show the AT/AE in a demo (or show a video of the AT/AE in use). For questions and to make a submission, please contact the Technology SIS Co-chair, Deanna Baldassari at [email protected]

Pre-Conference Institute: Kit Frank, OTR. "Position for Function: Make it fit with Cardbaord Carpenty"
An exciting opportunity you don't want to miss. Read below for more details on this unique experience we are offering this year at our Fall Conference and click here to view a video!
"Positioning needs are universal, yet one size doesn’t fit all.  The best equipment is customized, durable, attractive, safe, functional, needed and wanted, and constructed responsibility and inexpensively. Utilizing Adaptive Design techniques, you will learn how designing and fabrication with tri-wall cardboard meets user needs, whether in New York City or the Ecuadorian Andes.  This hands-on workshop will review concepts of positioning and customization and will teach the basics of cardboard carpentry.  You will better be able to maximize client’s function when you have this tool.  You will also learn about client and family participation and empowerment, and become aware of international movements and innovations to meet the needs of people with disabilities"
