Advocacy Spotlight - Champions for Occupational Therapy

The 2017-2018 Session has been very active and positive for occupational therapy.  We would like to highlight the efforts of the Senators and Representatives who support OT, as well as encourage your own advocacy efforts for the profession and the clients we serve.

The members of the General Assembly are always happy to hear from their constituents and the impact of legislation. To see who represents you, along with contact information for your legislator:

House Bill 208 – Occupational Therapy/Choice of Provider – Passed the House 115-3 on March 29, 2017.  Thank you to Representatives Hugh Blackwell, Gregory Murphy, Mitchell Setzer, and Pat Hurley as the primary sponsors of HB 208. We hope HB 208 will pass the Senate this year, too.

Senate Bill 307 – Companion Bill to HB 208, Occupational Therapy/Choice of Provider – Filed on March 16, and as of March 21, 2017, has been referred to the Judiciary Committee.

Senate Bill 583 – Occupational Therapist/Physical Therapist Salaries “A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO IMPROVE THE SALARIES OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS AND PHYSICAL THERAPISTS WHO ARE PUBLIC SCHOOL EMPLOYEES.” Recently filed on April 3, and as of April 6, 2017, the bill has been referred to the Education/Higher Education Committee.

We recognize and thank Senator Tamara Barringer and Senator Joyce Waddell for championing Bill 583 to increase the salaries of Occupational Therapists in the school system.
