NCOTA 2017 AT/AE Design Competition

This is a new initiative for NCOTA for encouraging development of creative, client-centered assistive technology (AT)/adaptive equipment (AE). It grew out of a similar program that was sponsored for 15 years by the SP Ableware Maddak company and AOTA at the annual, national conference, but ended in March of 2017. While students and clinicians were eligible to participate at the national level and win financial awards with their designs, this first year at NCOTA will concentrate on students only with a total of $500 in prize money (1st place: $300, 2nd place: $150, and 3rd place: $50). In 2018, event sponsors will be pursued so that additional prize money can allow current OT practitioners to participate and enter their AT/AE as well.

Students in current OTA and OT programs in NC are eligible for entry. They must submit a prototype of their AT/AE product and/or a video if the product is too large or they were unable to make a prototype. Each study will make a flyer describing their product with information provided from a form that will be provided. The AT/AE will be judged at the conference by a team experienced in AT with winners announced during the conference. While a student does not need to be present to show their equipment (it is preferred), a school representative does need to be present to answer questions and to show a video if provided of the AT/AE in use. For questions or to make a submission, please contact us at

Sunrise Chair Yoga

Kickstart your conference weekend with Sunrise Chair Yoga to awaken your body and mind.  Participants will be guided through a series of seated and standing postures using the chair as support or enhancement. This class will include brief breathing and guided meditation. Recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing. You will have bare feet during the class to ensure stability. Feel free to bring your own yoga mat if you prefer to not stand on the carpet.  Registration to participate on conference registration form.

For Hotel accommodations, we have a block of rooms at a special discounted rate at Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites near NC State.
